Fernandel, de son vrai nom Fernand-Joseph-Désiré Contandin, est un chanteur, acteur et réalisateur français né le 8 mai 1903 à Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône) et mort le 26 février 1971 à Paris. Issu du music-hall, il fut durant plusieurs décennies l'une des plus grandes stars du cinéma français, champion du box-office qui attira plus de 300 millions de spectateurs dans les salles. Comique emblématique du cinéma d'après-guerre, beaucoup de ses films sont devenus des classiques, comme Le Schpountz, L'Auberge rouge, Ali Baba et les Quarante voleurs ou La Cuisine au beurre, au même titre que plusieurs de ses personnages, à l'image de Don Camillo. Il a également brillé dans les compositions plus dramatiques notamment dans La Vache et le Prisonnier, Naïs ou Heureux qui comme Ulysse. Chanteur populaire, il a également laissé une discographie importante, parsemée là aussi de classiques tels que Félicie aussi, Ignace ou Le Tango corse. Reconnaissable grâce à sa fameuse « gueule de cheval » comme il se plaisait à le dire lui-même, il acquit une popularité telle en France et dans le monde que le général de Gaulle déclara qu'il était le seul Français à être aussi célèbre que lui. Son succès ne s'est jamais démenti. Marcel Pagnol dit aussi de lui : « Il a été l'un des plus grands et des plus célèbres acteurs de notre temps et l'on ne peut le comparer qu'à Charlie Chaplin ». Il est le père du chanteur comédien Franck Fernandel et le grand-père de l'écrivain Vincent Fernandel. Son frère était également comédien sous le pseudonyme de Fransined.
